What is 5052 Aluminum Sheet
5052 aluminum sheet plate alloy is alloyed with 2.5% magnesium and 0.25% chromium. 5052 has excellent workability, weldability, medium static strength, high fatigue strength, good weldability, and very good corrosion resistance, especially in marine atmospheres.
5052 is the highest strength alloy of the more common non heat-treatable grades. Fatigue strength is higher than most aluminum alloys.its slightly greater strength in the annealed condition minimizes tearing that occurs in 1100 and 3003.
It also has the low density and excellent thermal conductivity common to all aluminium alloys. It is commonly used in sheet, plate and tube form.
5052 isn’t just easily welded and highly corrosion-resistant, it is also tough and strong. It has good drawing properties and a high rate of work hardening. Its overall versatility, not to mention excellent value, makes it one of the most serviceable alloys available.
5052 aluminum sheet/plate chemical composition
5052 Aluminum Sheet is a Part of the 5xxx series of aluminum. Grades in this family are alloyed using magnesium (2.5%) and possess moderate-to-high strength characteristics. These grades are considered to have good weldablility and resistance to corrosion.
5052 Aluminum is optimal for sheet metal work and is very easy to form at room temperature. This material is very bendable, and can therefore handle tight radii. A non-heat treatable alloy, 5052 aluminum is readily welded by conventional methods.

Specialist tempers such as F, H116, H112 and H141 are also possible in 5052 – refer to standards for details.
How strong is 5052 aluminum?
Overall metal strength is measured by factoring together yield strength and tensile strength. Yield strength looks at the strength of a metal’s shape; measuring the point at which it permanently deforms. Tensile strength (also referred to as ultimate strength) measures the level at which metal can be stretched before it breaks.5052 aluminum alloy sheet tensile strength range is 31 to 44 KSI.
|Alloy||Density (kg/m3)||Elastic Modulus (GPa)||Mean Coefficient of Thermal Expansion 20-100°C (m/m/°C)||Thermal Conductivity at 25°C (W/m.K)||Electrical Conductivity MS/m at 20°C||Electrical Resistivity (n.m)|
|Equal Volume||Equal Mass|
|These comparisons are approximate only. The list is intended as a comparison of functionally similar materials not as a schedule of contractual equivalents. If exact equivalents are needed original specifications must be consulted.|
|Alloy||Why it might be chosen instead of 5052|
|3003||Brighter appearance required, particularly when considering treadplate.|
|5005||Bright (decorative) anodising finish is required.|
|5083||Higher strength or improved corrosion resistance required, particularly for ship hull applications.|
Coldworking(DC) 5052-h32 Aluminum Plate & Sheet
Aluminum 5052-h32 aluminium sheet cannot be hardened by heat treatment. However, it can be significantly hardened through coldworking processes, such as cold rolling.
Aluminum 5052-h32 for Extreme Corrosion Resistance
Since corrosion resistant 5052 aluminum sheet plate and 5052 aluminum sheet provides a light weight, high strength and attractive finish, it is perfectly suited for a wide range of marine applications including ship building, fuel tank assembly and oil line manufacturing.
5052-H32 Aluminum Sheet – (ASTM B209, QQ-A-250/8)
Superior corrosion resistance, good weldability, with excellent formability, makes 5052 Aluminum Sheet a common choice for chemical, marine or saltwater applications. 5052 Aluminum Sheet applications include: tanks, marine hardware, boat hulls, etc. Mill Finish, Not Polished, Non-magnetic, Brinell = 60, Tensile = 33,000, Yield = 28,000 (+/-).
5052-h32 aluminum alloy is a high strength, non-heat treatable metal material that contains magnesium as its added character element. However, aluminum 5052-h32 also contains small amounts of chromium, silicon, iron, copper, manganese and zinc to add additional strength to the aluminum base product. This corrosion resistant product also provides excellent weldability and cold-working capabilities, which makes it suitable for numerous applications.
Additionally, aluminum 5052-h32 possesses outstanding corrosion resistance, especially to salt water, and can be easily welded. Its high fatigue strength makes it an excellent selection for structures that need to withstand excessive vibrations. It also provides good workability, making it very useful in forming operations.
Some of the other applications that benefit from the corrosion resistant nature of 5052-h32 aluminum sheet and plate, include:
- Food processing equipment
- High strength sheet metal work
- Truck trailers
- Medical equipment
- Marine flooring
What is the difference between 5052 and 6061 aluminum?
6061 aluminum is one of the most common grades of aluminum sheet used in the market. The primary alloying elements of 6061 aluminum are magnesium (1.0%) and silicon (0.6%). This makes it a heat-treatable alloy, thus stronger than 5052 aluminum. It also features high resistance to stress and cracking as well as good formability and weldability.
Due to its strength, 6061 aluminum is used in structural and engineering applications. However, 5052 aluminum is more formable than 6061 aluminum.
What are the differences between 5052 and 3003 aluminum?
Aluminum alloy 5052-h32 sheet and plate is stronger than 3003 and provides increased corrosion resistance in highly corrosive environments, such as marine applications.
3003 aluminum sheet is alloyed with 1.2% manganese. While more malleable and formable than 5052 aluminum, it is not as strong (tensile strength 17 to 30 KSI vs. 31 to 41 KSI).
Due to the presence of copper, 3003 aluminum is highly resistant to corrosion. This grade also features excellent workability and weldability. Common applications for 3003 aluminum include sheet metal work, commercial signage, and refrigerator liners.
Aluminum 3003 is less expensive than 5052 and is probably the better choice for applications that require less strength and corrosion resistance.
What are the applications of 5052 aluminum sheet?
